China has successfully developed its first exoskeleton robot system for complex mine environments. The system aims to enhance human-machine collaborative rescue operations. The exoskeleton has completed three rounds of practical training with a national mine rescue team. It demonstrated excellent adaptability and stability in underground conditions. CHN Energy highlighted the system’s ability to operate efficiently in real mine scenarios. Early testing suggests the technology could revolutionize rescue operations. Rescue personnel have reported improved operational efficiency during trials.

The project began in July 2025, led by Shendong Coal Group of CHN Energy. It was developed in partnership with the China Coal Research Institute. The initiative addresses critical challenges in mine disaster response. Traditional equipment has limited intelligence and constrained individual rescue capacity. The exoskeleton is designed to overcome these limitations.

The robot features a “rigid-flexible coupling” structural design, integrating power-assist modules for upper and lower limbs. It includes a multi-sensor system and an AI controller for intelligent operation. This design enables efficient human-machine collaboration underground. It helps rescue personnel work more effectively in dangerous conditions. The robot’s AI can recognize movements and assist accordingly.

Key specifications include over six hours of continuous operation and movement recognition accuracy exceeding 95 percent. It can carry or drag a maximum load of 80 kilograms. The system reduces human metabolic energy consumption by roughly 20 percent. This significantly enhances endurance and reduces fatigue for rescue teams. It allows longer operations in hazardous underground environments.

Beyond emergency rescue, the exoskeleton shows potential in high-intensity mining tasks. It can assist with underground material handling and equipment installation. The technology may improve efficiency and safety in everyday mining operations. It also reduces the physical strain on workers performing demanding tasks. Industries are expected to benefit from its multi-purpose applications.

CHN Energy said the achievement strengthens China’s energy industry safety technology system. It contributes to modernizing mine emergency rescue capabilities. The exoskeleton represents a step toward safer and more efficient mining operations. Officials hope the technology will save lives and improve overall productivity.
