Real or Plastic Eggs: How to Spot the Difference?*

Real or Plastic Eggs

Rumors about plastic eggs circulating in Pakistani markets have caused growing concern among consumers. Many people claim to have seen eggs with unusual colors and textures, which they believe are signs of fake products. Some even say the eggs bounce like rubber balls when boiled and dropped, fueling fears that plastic eggs are being sold.

However, Mohsin Bhatti from the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) explained that these claims are unfounded. He clarified that the changes in color and texture are due to the cold storage of eggs, not the presence of plastic. During the summer, egg demand decreases, but poultry farms continue to produce eggs. To manage the surplus, eggs are stored in cold facilities for several months.

This extended storage process affects the consistency of the egg whites and yolks, making them appear more elastic. This texture change is what leads some people to believe the eggs are fake. Bhatti also pointed out that plastic cannot be boiled, fried, or used to make an omelette, which further discredits the rumors.

Bhatti compared the situation to fresh and stale produce, which changes in taste and texture over time. He emphasized that these natural changes are common and do not indicate the presence of plastic. The PFA has assured the public that all eggs in the market are genuine and safe for consumption.

The Punjab Food Authority urged people not to believe in misleading information and reassured consumers that the eggs sold in markets are authentic. The PFA remains committed to ensuring food safety and protecting consumers from misinformation.
