BEIJING – Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has introduced a new EV platform capable of charging vehicles as fast as traditional fuel refuelling, along with plans to establish a nationwide charging network across China.

At an event in Shenzhen, BYD founder Wang Chuanfu announced the “super e-platform”, which features peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW)—double that of Tesla’s latest superchargers. With this technology, EVs can gain a 400 km (249 miles) range with just a 5-minute charge.

“In order to completely solve our users’ charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make EV charging as fast as refuelling petrol vehicles,” Wang stated.

BYD claims this is the first time in the industry that a megawatt-level charging capability has been achieved.

The new platform will debut in two upcoming EV models, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, priced from 270,000 yuan ($37,328.91). To support the technology, BYD will establish over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China.

While BYD has not provided a timeline or investment details for the network, this marks a major shift from its reliance on third-party charging providers.

Tesla has been offering its Supercharger network in China since 2014, while local competitors such as Nio, Li Auto, Xpeng, and Zeekr have already invested heavily in their own charging infrastructure.

Despite its EV advancements, BYD’s sales are primarily driven by plug-in hybrids, with 4.2 million units sold in 2023. The company has set a target of 5-6 million units in 2024.

The launch of this super-fast charging platform and expansion of charging facilities signals BYD’s push to boost EV adoption and compete with global EV leaders.
