The Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given a strict 30-day deadline for traffic system improvement in Punjab and warned that if performance does not improve, a new department may have to be created. She said this after receiving a detailed briefing on Lahore’s current traffic situation, modern traffic system planning, road safety and management. The first aim is to bring visible improvement on the roads.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister said that traffic conditions in Lahore and all other cities must improve. She made it clear that no one will receive any special treatment, and every person violating traffic rules will face fines. She added that despite improvements in many other areas, traffic remains in very poor condition, which affects the state’s authority.

Officials informed the meeting that Lahore has been given a final 30-day decisive deadline to improve the situation. They also shared that the 60-year-old traffic act has now been updated with 20 major reforms. Under the new rules, vehicles with repeated violations will be auctioned, and even government vehicles breaking laws will face heavy fines. A 30-day period has also been given to end wrong-way driving across Punjab.

The briefing further explained that a strong crackdown will be launched to stop underage driving. Vehicle owners allowing minors to drive may face up to six months in jail. Strict action will also be taken against those who seat passengers on bus roofs. In addition, chingchi rickshaws will be fully banned from five model roads in Lahore.

It was also decided that marriage halls must ensure proper parking arrangements; without suitable parking, the hall will not be allowed to operate. The overall goal of these steps is to ensure major traffic system improvement in Punjab and restore discipline on the roads.
