KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has reiterated that there will be “no compromise over Sindh’s water rights” in his message on International Water Day.

“We are the protectors of the Indus River. How can new canals be constructed when there is already a shortage of water for Sindh’s fertile lands?” he questioned.

Highlighting the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) long-standing stance on water issues, the chief minister expressed strong reservations about the construction of new canals from the Indus River, stating that such projects pose a severe threat to Sindh’s agriculture and economy.

Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the Sindh government has devised an effective strategy to address the water crisis. However, he warned that the decision to construct new canals would exacerbate the existing challenges, further reducing the water supply for Sindh’s agricultural sector.

“The declining flow of the Indus River endangers the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. The dry riverbed is a warning sign for both life and agriculture in the province,” he stressed.

He also pointed out that climate change and the inequitable distribution of water resources have intensified the crisis, putting the future of the Indus River at serious risk.
